AT THE ZOO
The Perfect Time to Go to the Washington Park Zoo

Leaves are falling and so are temperatures, which can only mean one thing — autumn has arrived. There’s no better activity for a fall day in Michigan City than a trip to the zoo. Crowds are smaller, days are cooler, and changing leaves bring a burst of color to the park. The zoo’s wooded paths, colorful hillside, and fall flowers lead to gorgeous backdrops for a brisk walk and wonderful photos. We’ve gathered a few tips to help you make the most of your day, with plenty of animals to fall for and events you won’t want to miss.
Boo at the Zoo
Your little ghosts and goblins will sink their fangs into goodies from community-based Trick-or-Treat stations spread throughout the zoo, while also having an ‘erie-sistible’ time with a wide range of activities, including photo opportunities, spooky props, and BOO-themed animal enrichment.

On October 19th, gates will open at 10:00 am with trick or treating ending at 3:30 pm. The zoo will close at 4:30 pm. The staff strongly recommends purchasing your tickets in advance at the zoo office or on Eventbrite, since supplies are limited.
THERE IS ALSO STILL TIME TO BECOME A TRICK-OR-TREAT STATION SPONSOR.
If you are interested, please contact zoo staff at (219) 873-1510 or [email protected].

Extended Season
We are excited to announce that the zoo is extending our 2024 season to weekends throughout November. A zoo visit in cooler weather is truly a unique experience with quieter pathways and the chance to see some species actually being more active. The weather may affect the availability of some attractions and certain animals may not be on exhibit if the temperature falls below certain thresholds while they are safe in their climate-controlled holding areas.
The extended season will last from Nov 2nd to Nov. 30th for Saturday and Sunday visits from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., weather permitting.

In the Parks
Horizon Cares Day

Thank you to the 10 volunteers who came to Washington Park on September 12th for Horizon Cares Day. The wonderful staff helped us clean out and organize the garages in Washington Park after a very busy summer. We could not have completed this task in one day without them.
MAC
The Michigan City Public Art Committee hosted a neighborhood block party to celebrate neighborhood art in our community. There were free refreshments and complimentary rides provided by JoyRide.

Trail Creek Week

Trail Creek Week was held September 16-20 at Hansen Park. The outdoor classroom provides place based, outdoor environmental learning stations for area school kids. They also get to paddle Trail Creek in 24’ voyageur canoes. The program serves around 600 students annually. This year’s program was funded by the Michigan City Park Department, The Michigan City Sanitary District, the Trail Creek Watershed Partnership, and a generous donation from Mayor Angie!

Fedder’s Alley All Inclusive Playground
Michigan City is set to welcome a new destination playground and fitness park at Fedder’s Alley in Washington Park. Designed for children and adults of all ages and abilities, the $5 million project has already secured $3 million in funding. Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch has initiated a $2 million capital campaign to raise the remaining funds through grants and sponsorships.
During a press conference at the Guy Foreman Bicentennial Amphitheater, Parks & Recreation Superintendent Shannon Eason highlighted the facility’s all-inclusive nature, which surpasses ADA compliance. The park will feature accessible equipment, sensory areas, and safe surfaces for all children to enjoy.
U.S. Rep. Frank Mrvan, who helped secure $1 million in federal funding, also spoke at the event, underscoring the community’s commitment to inclusivity and accessibility.

Halloween Costume Exchange
We planned on having a Costume Exchange at Krueger Memorial Hall on October 13th, but truth is we only have about 7 costumes. Instead, we will be asking people all Halloween season to drop off costumes to us at City Hall, so we build up an inventory to have an actual exchange in the future.
